Will you help Jace?

Jace was turned over to a small town shelter when his owner was deployed overseas.  There wasn't much interest in another black dog, especially another black dog that seems to have health issues with his back legs. Having no other options, the shelter scheduled Jace for euthanasia.  Luckily for him, someone was watching over Jace, and Furry Kids’ was contacted to see if we could help.  Jace is a gorgeous male Flat Coated Retriever mix and only 1 year old; we couldn’t let him be put down… so we rescued him!  We thought that Jace might have Hip Dysplasia, which is not uncommon in large breed dogs.  So, we took Jace to our Vet and X-ray’s on both hips confirmed the diagnosis.

Hip Dysplasia is a painful, crippling disease that causes a dog's hip to weaken, deteriorate and become arthritic. It stems from abnormal development of the hip joint – a ball-and-socket type joint – in which the head of the femur does not fit properly into the socket. Hip Dysplasia can be mild and slightly disabling, or it can be severe and cause crippling arthritis. There is no complete cure, however there are treatment options that can enhance quality of life.  For Jace, his condition requires surgery in order for him to be able to live the life he so deserves.

In the time we’ve had Jace, we’ve learned a little more about his personality.  Jace is very, very sweet and loving….he is very much a people pleaser and loves to be with his “people.”  He likes to go for walks, but we try to limit that for now so that he doesn’t aggravate his already deteriorating hips.  Jace gets along well with the other dogs, but would probably be ok if he was the only male dog around.  Jace prefers to hang out with the ladies!  We’re not sure if Jace is housebroken because we have him in a boarding facility at the moment.  However, after his surgery Jace will need to go through rehabilitation for at least 6 weeks, which will be a great time to help him master the housebreaking skills!  He is such a smart boy, it won’t take much time at all and he is so worth the effort!!

In order to help Jace live a full life, we are trying to raise $950 so he can have surgery.  Since he has Dysplasia in both hips, the cost is $475 for each hip.  We’re hoping to raise enough money to schedule his surgery by the end of May.  The longer we wait, the longer Jace has to be in pain.  Can you help? Even $5 will help and every dollar raised will go to support Jace!

Thank you for reading Jace’s story…we appreciate your time!

Sincerely,
The Furry Kids’ Refuge team!
